City Awarded $2.3 Million Grants for Bloomfield's Liberty at Main Intersection Improvements and Chateau’s Riverfront Trail Stabilization

City Awarded $2.3 Million Grants for Bloomfield's Liberty at Main Intersection Improvements and Chateau’s Riverfront Trail Stabilization

Pittsburgh, PA – The City of Pittsburgh’s Department of Mobility and Infrastructure has received $2,332,540 in grants from the Southwestern Pennsylvania Commission (SPC) for two community infrastructure projects.  

The City was awarded $1,322,540 in funding through the SPC’s Transportation Alternatives Set-Aside Program (TA) for traffic signal upgrades and intersection improvements at the intersection of the Bloomfield Bridge, Liberty Avenue and Main Street.  

A longtime community priority, this project will completely reimagine and rebuild the complicated intersection to improve pedestrian safety, reduce vehicle conflicts and improve transit accessibility. The total project is expected to cost $3.65 million between the TA funding, Pennsylvania Department of Community and Economic Development Multimodal Transportation Fund grant and local matching funds. DOMI is currently working with PennDOT to contract a design team for the project.  

SPC approved an additional grant of $1,000,000 Smart Transportation for Livable Communities (STLC) funding for slope stabilization and trail restoration along the Three Rivers Heritage Trail in Chateau. After the portion of the trail between Branchport Street and Columbus Avenue failed last summer, the Three Rivers Heritage Trail has been detoured into the neighborhood and remediation planning started immediately. The funding will be used for the engineering and construction to remediate and reopen that portion of the trail.
