PITTSBURGH — An explosive opening ten minutes provided all the offense Point Park University needed on Wednesday night, as the Pioneers held off a relentless second-half press from West Liberty University to secure a 2-1 victory at F.N.B. Stadium.

 

With the victory, Point Park moves to 6-6-3 overall on the season and 5-5-1 in conference action. West Liberty falls to 6-6-3 overall with a 4-6-2 mark in league play.

Fast Start Off the Whistle

Point Park came out firing from the opening kickoff, establishing control of the tempo early and capitalizing on back-to-back opportunities in the opening minutes.

 

• 5th Minute (PPU 1, WLU 0): The Pioneers struck first at the 05:02 mark when Alejandro Vega Arteaga found the back of the net for his third goal of the season. The play was orchestrated by double assists from Rocco Domenighini and Lander Barrio Gonzalez to put Point Park ahead early.

West Liberty responded midway through the first frame. At the 30:57 mark, Hilltopper forward Jasper Newton netted his third goal of the year off an assist from Kevin Teather, trimming Point Park's lead to 2-1 heading into halftime.

The second half turned into a defensive battle as West Liberty pushed forward to find an equalizer. While the Hilltoppers held a 19-8 overall advantage in shots (8-4 on goal), Point Park’s backline and goalkeeping unit stood firm.
